Springwatching
Othona
Community, Burton Bradstock, Dorset
Half term weekend 28-31 May 2010.
Led by Dominic, Carolyn, Emily and Samuel Couzens.
A weekend of appreciating all
nature. Birding, moth-trapping, mammal catching, bugs, pond-dipping:
participants will try a bit of everything on this short course set on the
hills above West Bay, Dorset. It's mainly intended for families with
children, but in practice just about anybody turns up! The Othona Community
is a (loosely) Christian community, so there's grace before meals and short
chapel sessions for those who want them. The accommodation is quite basic.
Price: not yet set, but it's
pretty cheap. See www.othona-bb.org.uk for details (which should appear in
the next few weeks). Please do not book through me.

A Birding Adventure in Romania
Together with Balazs Szigeti of
Hungarian Travel Company Ecotours, I will be leading this exciting trip this
coming June. We will spend a week travelling in Romania, with 2 days in the
world-famous Danube Delta and 2 in the forests of Transylvania! The Delta
has the largest reed beds in the world, home to countless herons, Glossy
Ibises, pelicans, cormorants and Spoonbills, with other specials including
Penduline Tits, Whiskered Terns, Rollers, White-tailed Eagles and Red-footed
Falcons. In the mountains we will look for a whole suite of woodpeckers
(including Three-toed and Grey-headed), Wallcreeper, Lesser Spotted Eagle
and, to cap it all, Brown Bear, which we will look for from a hide deep in
the forest. Definitely a trip not to miss!
Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival in Romania and
drive to base for first night, birding en-route.
Day 2-3: Birding Dobrogea
wetlands. Board floating hotel in evening.
Day 4-5: Cruising the Danube Delta
in the floating hotel.
Day 6: Return to dry land and
travel day to Zarnesti, Transylvania.
Day 7-8: Birding and Bear-watching
(from hides) in Transylvania.
Day 9: Travel to airport.
