Great Tit (Parus major)

 

STATUS AT LONGHAM LAKES

Common resident. Breeds on site and is seen on most visits.

Breeding:
2010: Minimum of 5 singing males on-site.
2012: 1 territory Samuel’s Wood, 20th April.
2014: At least 12 singing males, early April.
2016: 8 territories were located in woodland and mature scrub (Steve Morrison).

High numbers:
1. 25 by Hampreston Fields on 18th September 2004 (post-juvenile dispersal).
2. 20 there on 3rd September 2003 (post-juvenile dispersal).
3. 15 present on-site on 25th January 2005.

Ringing:
2011: 36 ringed between 27th April and 28th September, with 6 on 27th July (Roger Peart).
2012: 33 ringed, with a small peak in September (Roger Peart).
2013: 27 ringed in total (Roger Peart).
2014: 37 ringed between May and November.

Recoveries/Controls:
Y512127, an adult male ringed at Canford Park, Wimborne, Dorset on 6th March 2012 was controlled at Longham on 24th July 2013 (3km SE, 1 year 140 days).
