Status at Longham Lakes

Uncommon summer visior and passage migrant; previously less regular.

Early records:
1. 1 in song on Hampreston Fields on 1st May 2002.
2. 1 adult there on 19th August 2002.
3. 1 heard on 1st May 2005.
4. Present on 29th June 2005. (Trevor Thorpe)
5. 1 heard on territory on 5th May 2006 (South Side)
6. 1 near LR North on 26th May 2006.
7. 1 on the edge of Longham Reservoir North, 13th September 2006.
8. 1 on 27th April 2007.
9. 1 by Longham Reservoir North, 15th June 2007 and again on 20th July 2007.
10. 1 in the Thicket, 9th September 2007.
11. 2 on the River Stour by Emily’s Wood, 25th April 2008
12. Seen by Trevor Thorpe by Longham Reservoir North, 22nd June 2008 and again on 12th July 2008.
13. 1 by Longham Reservoir North, 2nd September 2008, with 2 on the 3rd and 3 on 10th.

2009: Seen between 16th April (2) on Hampreston Fields and 16th September (1) in the ever-growing thickets around Longham Reservoir North.
2010: First heard 8th April, with 2 on 25th April and 14th May. Last seen, 2 on 9th September.
2011: First heard on 5th April.
2012: 1 on 2nd May (DC). 3 on 7th September. Last seen on 19th September.
2013: 1 on 8th May (DC).
2014: First one on 15th April.
2015: 1st record 15th April. Last on 18th September (ringed).
2016: 16th April to 28th September.

Earliest: 5th April 2011.
Latest: 19th September 2012.

Breeding:
3 singing males on 5th July 2009 (Trevor Thorpe) [2nd broods?]
2 singing males April 2010. 4 singing males on 16th April (Kevin Lane) and 2 on 10 May 2011.

Ringing:
2011: 12 ringed between 10th June and 28th September, with 5 on 27th July.
2012: 16 ringed between July and September, with 10 in the latter month.
2013: 14 ringed: 1 in July, 7 in August and 6 in September.
2014: 7 ringed, with 5 in September.

Recoveries/controls:
6478722, a female ringed on 15th August 2010 at Massereau, Frossay, Loire-Atlantique, France, was controlled at Longham on 30th August 2012 (393km and 2 years later).
X396954, ringed on 12th August 2010 at Hengistbury Head Centre, Christchurch, Dorset, was controlled at Longham on 16th August 2012 (12km, 2 years later).
Y512574, ringed at Longham on 30th July 2012 was controlled 13 days later at St Philbert-de-Grand-Lieu (Mars Ouest), Loire-Atlantique, 415km to the south. [We have had a Pochard at Longham marked at exactly the same place.]
