Green Woodpecker (Picus viridis)

Status at Longham Lakes
Common resident. At least 2 birds frequent the area all year round.

First recorded on 5th May 2002.

High counts:
3 on 7th December 2005 (Trevor Thorpe) and 13th January 2006.
3 on the grass beside the Quarry, 22nd September 2007 (Paul Corfield).
3 on 6th and 16th November 2010 (Ray Gleason)

Breeding:
2012: Male with brood patch ringed on 16th May (Roger Peart).
2014: At least one pair, early April.
2015: Pair present 21st January. Juvenile seen 7th August.
2016: A pair were confirmed holding territory in Samuel’s Wood but were also noted in Emily’s Wood
and adjacent areas (Steve Morrison).

Ringing:
2012: One ringed as above.
2013: 2 ringed, 1 on 27th May and 1 on 2nd July.
